Brendan Banfield is on trial, accused of the 2023 homicides of his wife, Christine Banfield, and a Springfield man, Joseph Ryan. The prosecution alleges Banfield created a fraudulent online profile to lure Ryan to the residence to stage a home invasion, which they claim was part of a deliberate plan to murder his wife. Testimony from an au pair who worked for the family is central to the prosecution’s case in the Fairfax County courtroom.
Case Highlights
- Brendan Banfield is facing charges that carry a potential sentence of life in prison, as he is accused of two homicides.
- The prosecution’s theory is that Banfield used a fabricated online profile to draw an individual, Joseph Ryan, to his residence.
- Juliana Peres Magalhães, a former au pair for the family, has provided testimony regarding a relationship with Mr. Banfield and the alleged sequence of events.
- Court proceedings address the specific method of luring the victim, which reportedly involved the use of an online community.
Relationship and Alleged Planning
Brendan Banfield, 40, employed Juliana Peres Magalhães, 25, as an au pair in 2022. Court evidence indicates the relationship developed into an intimate one, beginning in late 2021 and becoming sexual by August 2022. Prosecution filings allege that in October 2022, Mr. Banfield communicated to Ms. Magalhães his intent to end his marriage to Christine Banfield, which the prosecution contends led to the planning of the homicides.
Alleged Method of Entrapment
Testimony indicates Banfield utilized his wife’s computer to create a profile under the name “Anastasia 9” on the social networking platform FetLife. This profile, posing as Christine Banfield, was used to communicate with men interested in role-playing scenarios. The profile’s messages reportedly requested that the responding individuals bring items such as restraints and a knife for a planned encounter at the residence. Joseph Ryan, a Springfield resident, responded to the communications under the apparent belief that he was arranging a consensual adult activity with Christine Banfield.

Account of the February 24 Incident
According to prosecution testimony, on the morning of February 24, 2023, Mr. Ryan arrived at the Herndon, Virginia, residence with items including restraints and a knife, as reportedly requested through the online communications. Ms. Magalhães reportedly left the residence with the Banfields’ child before the incident. The prosecution alleges that after Ryan entered the home, Ms. Magalhães contacted Mr. Banfield, who then entered and discharged a firearm, striking Mr. Ryan. Legal filings further allege Mr. Banfield then used a knife on Christine Banfield. Ms. Magalhães subsequently called emergency services (911) multiple times. Mr. Banfield’s defense maintains he acted in self-defense, claiming he discharged the firearm at an individual who had allegedly assaulted his wife.

Trial Process and Key Testimony
Juliana Peres Magalhães is a key witness for the prosecution, providing her account of the relationship with Mr. Banfield and the alleged sequence of events leading to the homicides. Prosecutor Jenna Sands stated that the acts constituted a premeditated plan intended to use Mr. Ryan as a decoy while Christine Banfield was killed under the pretense of a justified defense. The litigation is being overseen by Judge Penney Azcarate in Fairfax County Court and is anticipated to span four weeks. The jury selection process involved questioning candidates on potential biases related to law enforcement, intimate relationships outside of marriage, and BDSM practices.
