Benadryl Death Plot Shocks Investigators

A grandmother and mother in Mechanicville, New York, poisoned and stabbed four children before killing themselves, according to police who say toxicology results now back up that finding.

Police Confirm Homicide and Suicide Rulings

Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt announced that the medical examiner ruled the deaths of Harper, Hudson, Gavin, and Grayson Harmon homicides. He said the deaths of Amy Stedman and Sarah Myers were ruled suicides. Investigators said the two women planned and carried out the killings together, with no evidence anyone else took part.

Police said everything happened inside the family’s apartment. At an earlier June 25 press conference, investigators said they found no sign that anyone outside the home was involved. That statement narrowed the case early on, even before toxicology work was finished.

Poison and a Stabbing Point to a Planned Killing

Rabbitt said evidence recovered from the apartment showed “intentional poisoning, to include numerous prescription and over-the-counter medications.” Investigators also said one child was stabbed multiple times and had defensive wounds, meaning the child tried to fight back. Police have not said which woman carried out the stabbing.

A handwritten note found at the scene, along with other physical evidence, led investigators to say it “strongly suggests” Stedman was involved in the deaths. Police have treated the note as part of a broader pattern of planning rather than a single explanation for why the killings happened.

Toxicology Confirms Benadryl and Kratom in Children’s Blood

In early September, police said preliminary toxicology results were “not inconsistent with the direction of our investigation.” Rabbitt said the findings did not surprise investigators, meaning the lab work matched what detectives already believed happened inside the apartment.

Sources told WNYT that toxicology testing found both diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, and kratom in the children’s blood. Kratom is a plant-based substance sometimes used for pain relief that can be dangerous in high doses. Police have not released the full lab report showing exact amounts.

A Motive Claim That Police Could Not Confirm

Before the children died, their father said he had received letters from Child Protective Services and had raised concerns about the children’s safety. Some notes and messages tied to the case referenced abuse claims, but police said those allegations were not independently verified by investigators.

That gap matters. Police have been clear about the forensic timeline, the poisoning, and the stabbing. But the deeper question of why the women believed killing the children was necessary rests on claims police could not confirm, not on physical evidence.

How This Case Fits a Grim Pattern

Research on homicide-suicides involving children shows that adults, usually parents or caregivers, commit nearly all such cases. Studies find these events are often tied to intimate-partner conflict, mental health crises, or legal stress, and are frequently planned in advance rather than sudden, impulsive acts.
