Warner Bros. Games’ Leadership Program Raises Questions About Meritocracy

Warner Bros. Games has recently launched a leadership program specifically targeting women and non-binary individuals, with the unpopular goal of increasing diversity within the gaming industry. The announcement comes on the heels of a $200 million loss incurred by the company’s Suicide Squad game, which had employed diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) consultants to assist in character development.

While the program’s stated objective of providing career development opportunities for underrepresented groups is — some would say — admirable, some critics argue that such initiatives may unintentionally undermine the principles of meritocracy and equal opportunity.
