A canceled party at Tampa’s Astro Skate rink escalated into a riot involving 400 to 500 people, incited by 36-year-old Stephanie Pedroso through Instagram. Pedroso’s daughter’s 18th birthday party was canceled due to Pedroso violating the event agreement by refusing to hire off-duty deputies and improperly marketing the event. In response, Pedroso allegedly live-streamed on her daughter’s account, offering to pay people to riot.
The resulting chaos led to 26 arrests and significant property damage, including a girl being thrown through a barber shop window. Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister criticized Pedroso for her reckless behavior. “As a parent, I cannot fathom what went through this woman’s mind when she put lives at risk to provoke this mayhem,” Chronister said. Pedroso’s alleged statements included violent and vulgar language, urging rioters to destroy property.
Astro Skate rink’s owner, Chris Maganias, supported the decision to cancel the party. “She came in, flipped out, cussed and screamed, and posted nonsense about coming to the skating rink the next night,” Maganias stated. The riot took police six hours to control, highlighting the severe consequences of social media misuse.
Pedroso faces multiple charges, including inciting a riot, which carries a potential five-year prison sentence under new Florida legislation. Additionally, she is charged with unlawful use of a two-way communications device and driving with a suspended or revoked license. Her husband faces similar charges.
Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez emphasized the importance of prosecuting those who incite violence. “This case is not about peaceful protesters. This case is about rioters, and in Hillsborough County, we will prosecute rioters,” Lopez said.
