Republicans Propose Plan To Regain Panama Canal

Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD) will introduce legislation allowing President-elect Donald Trump to negotiate the U.S. reacquisition of the Panama Canal. The bill reflects growing Republican concerns about China’s presence near the vital waterway.

The Panama Canal Repurchase Act directs Trump to initiate discussions with Panama’s government, with support from the Secretary of State. Johnson described the move as essential for national security, stating, “Owning and operating the Panama Canal might be an important step towards a stronger America and a more secure globe.”

Trump has long criticized the 1977 Carter-Torrijos Treaties, which transferred control of the canal to Panama by 1999. He recently called the agreement “foolish” and accused Panama of overcharging for canal access.

Republicans argue the canal’s control is critical for U.S. military readiness and economic stability. Trump emphasized its importance for Navy operations and shipping routes, calling it “a vital national asset.”

Panama’s President, José Raúl Mulino, dismissed Trump’s interest in reacquisition, refusing to consider any discussions regarding U.S. control or reduced transit fees.

The bill also requires a detailed report to Congress within 180 days, outlining negotiation progress and potential hurdles. With Republican majorities in both chambers and Trump returning to office, the legislation could gain momentum in the coming months.
