Rep. Victoria Spartz Demands Assurances From Speaker Johnson Amid Trump Endorsement

Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) has voiced concerns about House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) leadership, calling for guarantees that he will uphold the conservative agenda and not align with the “swamp.” Spartz’s remarks come after President-elect Donald Trump formally endorsed Johnson.

Spartz acknowledged the significance of Trump’s endorsement but urged caution, referencing Trump’s 2016 endorsement of former Speaker Paul Ryan, which she claimed failed to deliver on conservative priorities. “We still need to get assurances that Speaker Johnson won’t sell us out to the swamp,” Spartz said.

Trump’s endorsement followed Republican discontent over Johnson’s handling of a spending deal that prevented a government shutdown. The deal, which garnered Democratic support, left some Republicans dissatisfied, including Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), who announced he will not support Johnson in the upcoming January 3 vote for Speaker.

Massie argued that a speaker beholden to establishment interests cannot advance the conservative agenda voters expect. “A weak legislative branch, beholden to the swamp, will not be able to achieve the mandate voters gave Trump and Congress in November,” Massie stated.

Trump praised Johnson as a “good, hardworking, religious man” in his endorsement, urging Republicans to seize the opportunity to implement their agenda. However, Spartz insisted that Johnson must publicly commit to bold reforms, including spending audits, reconciliation offsets, and fiscal accountability structures.

Spartz emphasized the urgency of strong leadership in Congress, warning of “severe fiscal calamities” and their potential consequences. She added that structural reforms are necessary to fulfill the constitutional responsibilities of the legislative branch and to ensure the success of Trump’s agenda.
