Religious Organizations Slam Kamala Harris For Alleged Anti-Catholic Sentiments

Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is under fire from several religious groups, who accuse her of “anti-Catholic bigotry.” Brian Burch, leader of CatholicVote, claimed on X that Harris thinks devout Catholics are unfit for federal judiciary roles.

Harris’s controversial history with the Catholic community includes her grilling of U.S. District Court nominee Brian C. Buescher in 2018. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Harris questioned Buescher’s association with the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic charitable organization. She suggested that the group’s opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage might disqualify him from serving as a judge.

This line of questioning was seen by many as an unconstitutional religious litmus test, as it targeted fundamental Catholic teachings.

Kathleen Blomquist, speaking for the Knights of Columbus, denounced Harris’s implications. “Our nation’s history of anti-Catholic bias contributed to the founding of the Knights of Columbus,” Blomquist said. “We are dismayed that commitment to Catholic principles is seen as a disqualifier for public service.”

Kenneth Craycraft, a moral theology professor at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, stated that Harris could pose the greatest threat to religious freedom in American history if elected. He noted that Harris has shown intentions to enact policies against the Catholic Church and those who follow its moral guidelines.

Bill Donohue of the Catholic League cataloged Harris’s history of targeting religious individuals, particularly on issues related to abortion and LGBTQI rights. He cited her co-sponsorship of the Equality Act, calling it the most anti-religious liberty bill ever proposed, and criticized her vote against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

Burch added that Harris’s career is marked by gross incompetence, corruption, and blatant bigotry. “Harris has targeted people of faith and pro-life advocates for their beliefs,” he stated. “Her actions show a clear pattern of using government power against political adversaries.”
