Robert Redfield, former head of the CDC, has called for Congress to remove liability protections for vaccine manufacturers and greater accountability from public health officials. Speaking Wednesday at a Heritage Foundation event, Redfield criticized the liability shield provided to vaccine manufacturers under the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, arguing it has outlived its usefulness.
Redfield stated that COVID-19 vaccines were “oversold” and that public health leaders failed to provide accurate information, damaging trust in their institutions. He also called for transparency regarding vaccine injuries, pointing to cases he has treated of patients presenting with symptoms after vaccination, despite never contracting COVID-19.

“These companies have to be able to be held liable for their products like any other company.”

“I don’t think there was honest information given to the public,” Redfield said, adding that leadership failures at the CDC, FDA, and NIH have contributed to a credibility crisis.

To address systemic issues, Redfield suggested limiting public health officials’ tenures to 10 years, criticizing long-term leadership like Dr. Anthony Fauci’s 38 years at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Redfield argued that such extended terms discourage openness to alternative perspectives.
How many vaccines will it take before people start questioning whether we’re administering too many to our children? We need to eradicate the National Childhood Vaccination Injury Act of 1986 and restore liability to Big Pharma. pic.twitter.com/RsGz2Tyx6M

As a virologist, Redfield reiterated his belief that SARS-CoV-2 originated in a lab, calling it “educated to infect humans.” He recounted receiving death threats from scientists who opposed his views and encouraged him to take his own life.
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) also spoke at the event, pledging to prioritize investigations into federal pandemic decisions. Johnson said his immediate goals include obtaining unredacted records on vaccine side effects, such as heart inflammation, and improving government transparency under the Trump administration.
Johnson voiced support for Trump’s nominees, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Health and Human Services secretary, emphasizing their potential to increase access to withheld documents.
