Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz Praised Chinese Communism In The 1990s, Raising Questions About His Vice Presidential Nomination

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), the 2024 vice-presidential pick of Kamala Harris, is facing intense criticism for past comments in which he praised Chinese communism while teaching at a Nebraska high school in the 1990s. According to a 1991 article in the Alliance Times-Herald, Walz told students that Chinese communism is a system where “everyone shares” and that the government ensures citizens receive food and housing equally.

Walz’s comments, made while teaching in Alliance, Nebraska, focused on how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) promotes equality by ensuring that “everyone is the same,” regardless of their profession. He described how both doctors and manual laborers earn similar wages and emphasized that the government provides essential resources. However, his portrayal of the CCP’s policies left out the significant human rights abuses associated with China’s one-child policy. Walz described the policy as merely a tax on families with more than one child, failing to address the forced abortions and sterilizations that were widespread under the regime.

As Walz faces growing scrutiny from voters and political analysts, these remarks have raised concerns about his judgment and alignment with American values. The House Oversight Committee has already launched an investigation into Walz’s ties to Chinese officials, adding to the controversy.

With the Harris-Walz ticket under the spotlight, voters are questioning whether a candidate who once praised the Chinese communist system is suitable for national office. As these revelations continue to circulate, they could play a significant role in shaping the outcome of the election.
