A Brandon-based nonprofit organization distributed turkeys and essential groceries to hundreds of Tampa Bay families ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, addressing growing economic pressures in the community.
Boricuas de Corazon, which translates to “Puerto Ricans of Heart,” orchestrated the distribution of 300 turkeys alongside additional food items and household supplies at their latest community outreach event.
“The situation is terrible. Economically, you know, sky-high prices,” said Linda Perez, who established the organization’s local branch in 2018. The group’s commitment to serving those in need has expanded significantly, now helping more than 145,000 families annually through 28 different charitable events.
Cars lined up as residents waited for their turn to receive holiday provisions. Beyond seasonal assistance, the organization maintains year-round support for those facing various hardships.
“Boricuas de Corazon is an entity that does disaster relief the entire year,” Perez said. “Anything that happens with fire, natural disaster – and we assist in the community with a lot of different supplies by the government or by entities that support us throughout the year.”
The organization’s founding was inspired by the devastation of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, prompting Perez to establish chapters both on the island and in Florida. Their work spans from providing school supplies to offering baby formula for new mothers.
Among the recipients was Pia Ceccarelli Rosenberg, who collected 10 turkeys for her foundation’s Christmas celebration supporting survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
The distribution event highlighted both the persistent need in the community and the vital role of local charitable organizations in addressing food insecurity during the holiday season.
As inflation continues to impact household budgets across the region, Boricuas de Corazon remains committed to bridging the gap for struggling families through regular assistance programs and special holiday initiatives.
