Liz Cheney Accused Of Witness Tampering As House GOP Calls For FBI Probe

Liz Cheney, a former member of the January 6 Committee, faces allegations of tampering with a witness, sparking calls from House Republicans for an FBI investigation. A congressional report released Tuesday accuses Cheney of engaging in improper conduct that violated federal law.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), chair of the House Administration Oversight Subcommittee, claims Cheney secretly communicated with Cassidy Hutchinson, a witness, without informing Hutchinson’s attorney. The report asserts this act likely violated 18 U.S.C. 1512, which prohibits interference with witnesses.

The report also alleges that Cheney’s actions were part of broader misconduct by the January 6 Committee. Loudermilk’s findings claim the committee withheld and destroyed records that could have been included in the final report.

Hutchinson’s testimony, widely publicized by the committee, is now under scrutiny. According to the report, her most dramatic claims lacked supporting evidence, and the committee knowingly promoted falsehoods.

Cheney, who recently stated she should not face jail time, has denied wrongdoing. Critics argue her public comments suggest an effort to distance herself from mounting accusations of unethical behavior.

Republicans also allege collusion between the January 6 Committee and Special Counsel Jack Smith. They argue the committee’s actions were politically motivated, aimed at damaging President Donald Trump and his supporters.
