On the eve of Wimbledon, British tennis star Emma Raducanu has publicly shut down swirling romance rumors linking her to Spanish champion Carlos Alcaraz. In a pre-tournament press conference, when asked directly about the speculation, a smiling Raducanu set the record straight.

“We’re just good friends,” she stated, according to The Mirror. She acknowledged that their on-court partnership has provided some light-hearted entertainment for fans, telling the New York Post, “I’m glad the internet is having fun and we’re providing some entertainment for everyone.”

A U.S. Open Partnership Sparks Speculation

The gossip surrounding the two 22-year-old Grand Slam champions reached a fever pitch in recent weeks after it was announced they would be teaming up to play in a new-look mixed doubles event at the U.S. Open in August. The news, combined with the pair being seen practicing together at Wimbledon for a sponsor, sent social media into a frenzy.

Raducanu confirmed that Alcaraz was the one who initiated the on-court partnership. “Yes, he asked me,” she revealed. “He asked me earlier on in the year, and I was very surprised, honored, and excited.”

A Friendship Forged Before Fame

While their U.S. Open pairing is new, Raducanu explained that their friendship is not. It was forged in 2021, the year both players had their major breakthroughs. “We were, like, speaking and friends before anyone won anything,” she said.

She recalled their time at the 2021 U.S. Open, where she won the women’s title and he had a breakout run to the quarterfinals. “I remember he beat Stef [Tsitsipas] in the third round, and it was like a big win,” she said, as reported by Sportskeeda. “It was really cool to kind of, I guess, go through that tournament together, and then I kept going… but we were staying in touch for the whole time.”

With the rumors now addressed, Raducanu’s focus returns to the court. She is set to face fellow Brit, teenage wildcard Mingge Xu, in the first round at Wimbledon.
