Multiple reports indicate that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to surveil American taxpayers.
American Greatness reported that House Judiciary Chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) are investigating the matter.
The outlet noted the release of a video showing an IRS officer mentioning a “new AI system targeting potential abusers by analyzing returns, bank statements, and financial information globally” sparked the investigation.
Jordan and Hageman are concerned over the revelation and are leading committees in the House to investigate. Their statement on the matter read: “The Committee and Select Subcommittee have reason to believe that the IRS is working with other federal agencies to conduct this AI-powered warrantless financial surveillance.”
Hageman shared her concerns during an interview with Real America’s Voice:
Charging the IRS with overstepping their authority, Jordan and Hageman’s statement added: “The use of AI technology to actively monitor millions of Americans’ private transactions, bank accounts, and related financial information — without any legal process — is highly concerning.”
Multiple outlets reported on IRS abuses. Last week, Fox News reported the IRS was actively monitoring “citizens’ bank accounts without legal process.”
Questioning the integrity of the IRS, Jordan and Hageman’s statement continued: “This kind of pervasive financial surveillance, carried out in coordination with federal law enforcement, into Americans’ private financial records raises serious doubts about the IRS’s—and the federal government’s—respect for Americans’ fundamental civil liberties.”
Claims of DOJ and FBI abuses are not new. Former President Donald Trump has accused the Biden administration of weaponizing the DOJ.
In 2022, American Greatness reported that House Republicans revealed the IRS was involved in political targeting and that during President Obama’s administration, there was “collusion between the Department of Justice and the IRS to prosecute conservative groups, with the IRS providing confidential information to the DOJ.”
In February, the Judiciary Committee claimed the FBI had targeted individuals and groups that oppose Democrat initiatives. The report notes that Jordan demanded answers from FBI Director Christopher Wray after a leaked internal memo revealed the FBI had infiltrated churches and parishes and identified Catholics as potential extremists.
Fox News confirmed the report with the help of former FBI special agent and whistleblower Kyle Seraphin. A leaked FBI memo read: “The FBI’s Richmond Division would like to protect Virginians from the threat of ‘white supremacy,’ which it believes has found a home within Catholics who prefer the Latin Mass.”
Rep. Jordan posted that the IRS has been weaponized and is “using AI to spy on taxpayers ‘en masse.’”
