Ex-Sen. Bob Menendez Gets 11-Year Prison Sentence In Bribery Scandal

A federal judge sentenced former Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to 11 years in prison Wednesday, concluding one of the most high-profile corruption cases in recent history. The once-powerful Democrat was convicted of accepting bribes in exchange for using his influence to benefit foreign entities.

Menendez was found guilty on 16 felony charges, including conspiracy, bribery, and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Prosecutors revealed he accepted cash payments, gold bars, and a luxury vehicle from businessmen who sought favors related to U.S. policy toward Egypt and Qatar.

During the sentencing, Judge Sidney Stein told Menendez that his actions represented a grave abuse of power. The judge noted that while Menendez had once been a respected public servant, his willingness to sell his influence had permanently tarnished his reputation.

Menendez was not the only one sentenced in the case. Two of his co-defendants, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, also received prison time. Hana, who prosecutors say facilitated deals with Egyptian officials, was sentenced to eight years. Daibes, a businessman involved in the bribery scheme, was given seven years.

Nadine Menendez, the former senator’s wife, faces her own trial on charges of participating in the bribery scheme. Prosecutors allege she was heavily involved in securing illicit payments and gifts for her husband. Her trial has been delayed due to health issues.

Outside the courthouse, Menendez remained defiant, claiming he was unfairly targeted and calling the prosecution politically motivated. He also echoed criticisms previously made by President Donald Trump about the justice system, vowing to appeal his conviction.
