EU Intensifies Investigation Into X Following Musk’s Support Of German Opposition

European regulators are demanding internal algorithm data from Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, as they escalate their investigation into potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). The timing of this move has raised concerns, as it follows Musk’s vocal support for the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

The EU’s demands include internal documents detailing X’s content recommendation systems and recent modifications. The commission has imposed a February 15 deadline for compliance. Failure to meet the requirements could result in significant fines or further restrictions on X’s operations within Europe.

Musk recently conducted a widely viewed interview with AfD leader Alice Weidel, which drew hundreds of thousands of viewers and brought additional attention to the party’s opposition to the EU’s handling of migration. EU officials have accused X of amplifying “far-right” content, a claim Musk has dismissed as an attempt to suppress political dissent.

Henna Virkkunen, the EU’s digital commissioner, has defended the investigation, stating that all platforms operating within Europe must adhere to the DSA’s requirements. She suggested that the EU would take decisive action if X is found to be in violation of the law.

Critics argue that the investigation is politically motivated, as support for the AfD continues to grow amid rising concerns over mass migration and economic instability. Some suggest that the EU’s focus on X is part of a broader effort to control public discourse ahead of key elections.

Despite mounting pressure, Musk has remained defiant, arguing that free speech should not be compromised. He has vowed to continue using X to challenge narratives pushed by European leaders and advocate for policies he believes will benefit citizens.
