A conservative group, the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), has urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to investigate claims that Democrats threatened President Biden with the 25th Amendment. The group wants the House Judiciary and Oversight committees to look into allegations that Democrats pressured Biden to step down or face removal from office.
The AAF’s call for an investigation stems from a report suggesting that Democratic leaders threatened to use the 25th Amendment if Biden did not withdraw from the presidential race. This amendment allows the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to declare the president unfit for duty, potentially leading to the vice president assuming the presidency.
“If true, this would be a significant seizure of power in American government history,” the AAF stated in their letter to Johnson. The group emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in this matter, urging a thorough investigation using Congress’s powers of subpoena and contempt.
Biden recently announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. This decision followed intense pressure from within his party after a widely criticized debate performance.
Speaker Johnson has yet to respond publicly to the AAF’s request. The call for an investigation highlights ongoing concerns about Biden’s leadership and the potential political maneuvers within his party.
