Biden Blames Obama’s Weakness For Russia’s Invasion Of Ukraine, Woodward Book Reveals

According to Bob Woodward’s new book, War, President Joe Biden places the blame for Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine squarely on former President Barack Obama’s handling of the 2014 Crimea crisis. Biden reportedly confided to a friend that Obama’s failure to act decisively against Russian aggression gave President Vladimir Putin the confidence to invade Ukraine again.

“They f—ed up in 2014,” Biden is quoted as saying, criticizing Obama’s decision not to send weapons to Ukraine when Russia annexed Crimea. Biden lamented that the lack of a strong response gave Putin the green light to continue his expansionist ambitions, leading to the full-scale invasion in 2022.

The book also details how U.S. intelligence, in October 2021, uncovered Putin’s invasion plans through a highly placed source within the Kremlin. Armed with this information, Biden confronted Putin during a December 2021 video call, which became highly contentious, with Putin reportedly issuing nuclear threats during the exchange.

By mid-2022, intelligence reports suggested that Putin, increasingly desperate due to military losses in Ukraine, might resort to using tactical nuclear weapons, with officials estimating a 50% chance of such an escalation.
