A New Political Party is Born
In a move that could permanently alter the American political landscape, tech billionaire Elon Musk has officially launched a new third party, the “America Party.” The announcement, made on Saturday, July 5, 2025, is the culmination of Musk’s explosive public feud with President Donald Trump over what Musk has labeled an “insane spending bill.”
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk declared in a post on his social media platform, X. The move marks a dramatic break for the billionaire, who had previously been one of the largest financial supporters of President Trump and the Republican party.
By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!
When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.

A “One-Party System” on Spending
Musk’s decision to form a new party is a direct response to the recent passage of President Trump’s “One, Big, Beautiful Bill.” Musk has been a fierce critic of the legislation, which he claims will add trillions to the national debt. He argues that the Republican party’s willingness to pass the massive spending bill proves that both major parties are fiscally irresponsible.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk stated. He launched the party after a poll on X showed his followers favored a new party by a two-to-one margin. “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” he declared.
An Uphill Battle Against the Duopoly
Despite Musk’s immense wealth and public profile, the path for a new third party in the United States is notoriously difficult. As election law expert Brett Kappel explained to CBS News, the system is designed to protect the two major parties.
“The state laws in all of the states are biased towards the two major political parties and make it as difficult as possible for the emergence of a third political party,” Kappel said. Gaining ballot access in all 50 states is a complex and expensive legal challenge. However, Kappel also noted, “Only the richest person in the world could make a serious effort at creating a new American political party.”

Musk’s stated goal is to use the America Party to challenge incumbent members of Congress—primarily Republicans who voted for the spending bill—in the 2026 midterm elections. The move threatens to create a civil war on the right and has set the stage for a dramatic political battle.
