A Grassroots Victory in a Liberal Stronghold

In a powerful display of local-level activism, a coalition of conservative and religious residents in Torrance, California, successfully defeated a city council resolution that would have officially recognized June as LGBT Pride Month. The victory marks a significant reversal from 2024, when a similar resolution passed, and demonstrates the power of organized grassroots opposition.

The effort was spearheaded by the pro-family activist group MassResistance, whose local leader, Arthur Schaper, coordinated with community members to pressure the council. “We want to really stress that people don’t stop fighting and don’t give up, even if you lose the first time,” Schaper told American Family News. “We had a success in the long term. It was great.”

How the Vote Was Won

The resolution, which would have promoted LGBT symbolism on city property and social media, failed on a 2-3-1 vote. The outcome hinged on two crucial swing votes. Councilman Jon Kaji, who had previously supported the measure, changed his vote to “no” after facing pressure from the local Japanese-American community.

Additionally, Councilman Asam Sheikh, who is Muslim, abstained from the vote following appeals from his constituents. His abstention effectively counted as a “no,” sealing the resolution’s defeat.

“Don’t Shove It Down My Throat!”

The council meeting was marked by passionate debate, most notably from Councilman Aurelio Mattucci, who delivered a blistering critique of the resolution and the political agenda behind it. He blasted the effort as an attempt to indoctrinate children and impose a liberal ideology on the community.

“Don’t shove your LGBT movement down my throat!” Mattucci declared from the dais. “I’m tired of this. I’m tired of it being shoved in our face… it’s being shoved into our youth.”

The successful pushback in Torrance, a suburb in deep-blue Los Angeles County, is being hailed by conservatives as a blueprint for how local communities can effectively resist the imposition of progressive ideologies, even in areas where they are at a political disadvantage.
